Brand New Newborn Nest Prop

A while ago I decided that my newborn nest prop had seen better days and needed a bit of a makeover – I’m always happy to get creating so I ripped it apart to start it again.

This is it’s first outing in the new size-reduced and tidied up version and now I’m so happy with it.  It always a bit big before but I was happy to fill up the extra space with any number of accessories from flowers to teddy bears.  However, it’s the perfect size now and works just as a simple prop with nothing else added in – this family really wanted to keep their session clean and simple so I’ve just gone with a white fluffy blanket and a white wood floor drop. Using props in your newborn photo shoot doesn’t need to make your pictures cluttered if that’s not your style.

When You're Just an Angel...

This is the face of a little girl who knows what a little angel she was being at her newborn photo shoot!

My little feather angel wings are always a popular accessory at a newborn session as, of course, they are all angels.  It’s not that often that I get a little smile to go with them though so that was an added bonus.

Brown Fine Art Canvas Backdrop for Baby Portraits

On paper, the idea of using a brown backdrop for a baby photo shoot doesn’t sound all that appetising.  But that’s until you see it in action!

I have a wide range of backdrop options that you can use for any photo shoot at the studio from plain wood to patterned wallpaper and also including some fine art canvas styles as well. This one in the image is the brown one (I also have blue/grey, blue, and pink) and, as you can see, it looks just fabulous.  It tones so well with babies with warmer skin tones, really boosting their natural glow and it’s the perfect colour to set off pinks, peaches and creams.  It is however not one of the ones that gets picked terribly often and I think that’s because it sounds really dull.  Hopefully this picture does a little to fight it’s corner and I’ll have it back in action at the studio again soon.

Newborn Baby Spa Props

If you’ve ever met a newborn, you’ll know how tough and stressful their life can be so these baby spa photo props for newborn photo shoots are the perfect addition.

I mean there’s all the feeding and napping to contend with alongside the pressure to look cute at all times, so it’s not a big surprise that your average newborn could use a little pampering and time out :)

I’ve actually had my eye on this little set for a while and decided to take the plunge because, basically, I couldn’t resist any more.  There’s a tiny armchair, towel, complimentary bathrobe and even tiny cucumber slices for their little eyes!  I mean, how’s a girl to hold back from owning that much cuteness?

Baby Oscar Sitting Pretty

Baby Oscar was having a fine time at his photo shoot and seemed to really enjoy sitting pretty in my little grey chair.

It’s a simple little set up that really lets his gorgeous little personality and cheeky grin shine through – sometimes that’s all you need to capture the moment.  Actually at the moment, he was essentially laughing his head off at my face which he seemed to find extremely funny.  It’s kind of hard not to take that personally but I guess whatever gets the job done is good with me :)

Newborn Photography - Nesting

This was the last time that I used my newborn nest in its old form before I took it apart and remade it but it’s just as lovely as ever with the dark tones and lilac accents.

It had got a bit raggy round the edges and it was always a little bit big so that’s been fixed now but it was a great excuse to fill the extra space with florals so there was no real loss as far as I’m concerned.  This is another of my props that is really versatile in terms of how you style it to fit in with the type of photos that you’d like to create.  I do love it with the florals (and I have lots of different colour options when it comes to those) but it also looks great with teddies, birth announcement props, and also autumnal leaves, pumpkins and pine cones when it’s seasonally appropriate.  It also looks great against my white wood floor drop where it can be accessorised with lighter shades to give is a kind of floaty quality.  There’s really no limit to how you can dress it up to make your photos completely unique to you.

Miniature White Bed - Style it Up

When it comes to choosing props to have in my studio, I try to pick items that can be styled in lots of different ways so they are really versatile.

My miniature white bed is a great example of this – in the case of this beautiful little girl, we went all out girly for purple and florals and even added one of my studio pettiskirts for additional floof!  However, the bed looks just as great with teddies, blankets and I even have a little Christmas set with a miniature stocking to hang on the end which I get out when seasonally appropriate.

There’s actually no limit to the amount of props my little magpie heart covets but there is, sadly, a limit to the amount of space I have in the studio so it’s really important that each piece really earns its living as part of my collection.
